10 Things to do in Marfa

There’s plenty to explore in this artistic West Texas town. Whether you’re making the journey to attend a special event like the Trans-Pecos Festival of Music + Love, or simply for a weekend getaway, let this list serve as an essential guide for things to see and do:

1. El Cosmico


Reserve a teepee, yurt, airstream or tent for the ultimate glamping experience at hotelier Lil Lambert’s cosmic compound. 


2. The Chianti Foundation


Founded by famed Marfa resident Donald Judd, The Chinati Foundation is a contemporary art museum housing a number of Judd’s pieces in addition to holding regular exhibitions.
Visit and get to know one of the pioneers of Marfa.

3. Marfa Ballroom

While the Chinati Foundation features contemporary artists, including Donald Judd, Marfa Ballroom is Judd’s estate. Take a tour and see where the man himself once lived.

4. Marfa Lights Viewing Center

For a truly cosmic experience, head to the viewing center to observe the infamous and curious “mystery lights.” What will you see when you stare into the abyss?

5. Cobra Rock Boot Company

Take home a pair of beautifully hand-crafted boots from the artisan’s at Cobra Rock Boot Company. It’s an investment, but once you lay your eyes on a pair, you’re sure to agree it’s worth it.

6. Marfa Public Radio: KRTS

If you love public radio programming, pay a visit to Marfa’s local station, KRTS. Weekday interview program West Texas Talk feature all kinds of profiles from locals and visitors alike, including recent Trans-Pecos performers Phosphorescent and Langhorne Slim.

7. Maiya’s Restaurant

If an elegant dinner strikes your fancy, enjoy a delectable meal prepared by 2013 James Beard semifinalist, Maiya Keck. The Italian offerings will transport you to Europe. Try the homemade basil pesto penne for a delightful, hearty dish.

8. Marfa Book Company

Check their event calendar to see who’s in town for a talk or musical performance.

9. Thunderbird Hotel

This charming boutique hotel is perfect for a visit or a stay. Enjoy food and drinks at Capri, their restaurant and bar, or enjoy a relaxing afternoon by the pool. Pop into their shop to peruse treasures to take home.

10. Prada Marfa

While about 30 miles outside of Marfa, many people who make the trip feel they be remiss to leave without a visit to the Prada Marfa installation. Take your camera and snap that selfie – we know you can’t resist.
