#ATXitecture: A Tour of the Peddle Office in Austin

Intangible qualities are contained within buildings. They exist in time, in experience, and in memories past. Innovation magnifies the old with the new, giving it a distinct and changed identity and by doing so, adding another layer of architecture over time.

Austin architecture firm Alterstudio teamed up with interior designers, Joel Mozersky and One Eleven Design, to create an innovative workspace full of character. The century old Buttrey Building clearly shows itself with weathered concrete columns and crumbling brick facades. After introducing a new palette of materials and modern design, the 6,500 square foot Peddle headquarters now fills the converted space in downtown Austin.

The 16-foot operable door stretches the length of the room. This allows the space to be redefined and change functions as needed. Reclaimed wood walls and floors are sourced from local barns, which provide warmth and contrast to the steel and glass meeting rooms. Timber slats welcome clients and guests to a waiting area formed by a horseshoe of steel structure. This permeable space gives guests a partial enclosure for relaxing or meeting.

The lounge area serves as a bridge between the workspace and breakroom. Anchored by the elevator shaft, which is now used for storage, the textured walls of the cast-in-place concrete shaft display a beautiful reminder of the bones of the original building.

The break room has a playful feel with its turf covered walls and rope chandelier. This nook makes for a great getaway space for workers to relax.

Overall, the conversion and reuse of the Peddle office displays an innovative workspace for Austin. By introducing new ideas, materials, and concepts, the space is transformed into a thriving workplace.
