Austin Men’s Barbershop Guide: Where to Get an Old School Cut in the New Austin

Let’s take a trip back to a different era – during the late 19th or early 20th century – when the neighborhood barbershop was a home away from home, when men knew their barber like a friend, when a haircut was a relaxing experience. At some point in the years that followed, the experience was lost in a sea of cheap, 10-minute trips to strip malls, and with it went an appreciation for a good, stylish ‘do. Luckily for Austin, though, the city is home to a few barbershops dedicated to bringing that classic experience back, offering services like tailored styling, hot lather shaves, men’s manicures, and, of course, free beer.

If you like to take good care of your hair and make sure that your style is on point every day, you will no doubt want the best hair styling cream for men you can get!

Shed isn’t your typical barbershop. With a fresh, bright interior made possible by large windows at the front of the house, Shed embodies modern Austin. Walk into the space on South First and get handed a cold craft Hops & Grains beer (free koozie included), chill out to the vinyl-only music, and most importantly, get a really good haircut for a reasonable price ($28). Appointments are recommended, but walk-ins are welcome.

Upon first glance, you may mistake The Boardroom Salon for an upscale pub. Lined with rich wood detailing from the walls to the floor, a pool table and a complimentary beverage, the space is specially tailored for a masculine aesthetic. Slide into a large leather chair for optimal comfort and experience the signature service, The Benchmark ($55), which includes a personal consultation; tailored cut; paraffin hand dip; scalp, face and hand massage; and more. The Boardroom also offers a variety of massages, facials and coloring services. Reserve an appointment online at

One of the most lavish of the bunch, Finley’s is more than a haircut, but rather, an experience. It defines itself as “a new kind of old-fashioned barber shop,” and that it definitely is. Finley’s maintains the vintage charm of an old school barbershop with its straight-razor shaves and shave brushes while also keeping the atmosphere modern with sleek design. Of its multitude of services, the most popular is the Finley’s Premier Hair Package ($30), which includes a massaging shampoo, cut and style, hot lather neck trip and neck massage, and a complimentary edge-out between cuts. If you’re feeling the desire to go all out, the Ultimate Package ($98) includes everything that comes with the Premier Hair Package along with a scalp treatment and an Executive Hand Detail (i.e., a manly manicure with exfoliating arm massage).

With its yellow-and-black-checkered tile, traditional block-letter logo and classic barber’s pole spinning out front, you’ve most likely seen Avenue Barber Shop while strolling down South Congress. This barbershop is as close as you’ll get to the traditional “guys’ barbershop” experience, its interior furnished with vintage chairs and an array of unique posters and other wall decals. There’s no need to schedule an appointment, so just walk in, sit back, and enter a new (or, rather, old) era. It’s also a bang for your buck with a standard haircut clocking in at $22.
