On Saturday, February 1, Austinites can explore the homes they have admired from afar on the 7th Annual Austin Modern Home Tour. Not only will ticket holders see some of the most notable contemporary homes in the city, but they will also meet the creative geniuses behind the architecture, design, and building of these dwellings.
You will probably not have enough time to see all 13 homes, so it is helpful to make a game plan before you set out. Our Design Columnist, Sarah Stacey, recommends reviewing the full gallery of homes online before you go out. Make note of the ones you like most, selecting about 5-7 to see in person, and then locating them on a map before charting out a route. Here are the top 3 homes Sarah recommends checking out:
1. 4902 Tortuga Place
Sarah: Designed by Bercy Chen Studio, one of the titans of modern architecture here in Austin, this home is situated on Mount Bonnell and has views of the lake. The exterior is gorgeous, with dramatic angles and lines that create visual interest. I am most excited to see the vegetative roof (pictured above).
2. 314 Ridgewood Road
I really like the way Chris Davenport of Cornerstone Architects applied materials to this house. They successfully mixed many different types of wood and stone on the exterior and throughout the areas of this home, providing it a warm and inviting feel.
3. 4503 Oakmont Boulevard
Designed by Winn Wittman Architecture, this home was originally a 1950s ranch house. I love the front exterior of the home, and the true-to-its-era midcentury modern style. I’m hoping they display some photos from before the renovation – I’d love to see what it looked like.
The Austin Modern Home Tour is this Saturday, February 1st from 11:00am – 6:00pm. Tickets can be purchased in advance for $30 here or can be purchased for $40 on the day of the tour for.
